(Hollywood, Fla.; November 21, 2006) – In the spirit of goodwill, The City of Hollywood, Fla., and Crowley Maritime Corporation’s liner services group recently joined forces to provide Higuey/Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, with the first fire rescue truck in that municipality’s history.
Last June, the Hollywood City Commission voted to donate a retired 1995 Custom Body Freightliner rescue vehicle to its Sister City of Higuey/Punta Cana. However, the resolution also stated that Hollywood was not responsible for the cost of shipping the vehicle to the Caribbean country.
When contacted, officials in Higuey/Punta Cana indicated that their municipal budget was one of bare bones and that they did not have the funds to pay for the shipping. Faced with the dilemma, Jos Zaiter, Hollywood’s Director of Community and Public Relations, proceeded to contact Crowley’s Vice President of Operations for Latin America, Michael Hopkins, to seek the company’s assistance. After explaining the situation to Hopkins, he agreed to help and started the ball rolling to make the shipping possible at a minimal cost.
“We’re very grateful to our friends at Crowley for having a good neighbor policy and making this happensin March of 2005, Higuey had the worst fire in the country’s history where 133 people lost their lives and several others where injured,” said Mayra Hernandez, Chair of Hollywood Sister Cities International Program. “I’m sure that if they had the rescue vehicle at the time maybe some lives would have been saved.”
Crowley loaded the rescue vehicle Sunday in Port Everglades aboard the vessel Crowley Sun. It is scheduled to arrive and be discharged tomorrow in the Dominican Republic.
This is the second time that Crowley has assisted the City of Hollywood with its benevolence endeavors. The first time the company shipped free of charge a street light with its control box and accessories which was donated by Broward County to Pedernales, Dominican Republic. It was also the first time that a street light had been installed in the town’s history.
